Starbucks customers have taken to social media to share their experiences with the coffee chain’s new line of olive oil-infused drinks, and apparently for some the picture isn’t so pretty. .
On March 16, a post titled “Olive oil drinks…” was added to the r/starbucks subreddit by a Redditor who claims to be a current Starbucks barista. In it, they share an experience their co-workers reportedly had after trying the new Oleato drink list.
For those unfamiliar, these new coffee drinks are infused with Partanna cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and debuted Feb. 21 in limited markets.
“Have you tried them? I wonder how many people will happen to them what a few have happened to our team,” Redditor u/MoodyStarGirl wrote. “Half the team tried it yesterday and a few ended up… Needing to use the toilet, if you know what I mean… Honestly, I’m scared to try because I already have stomach/intestinal problems.”
The Reddit user, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, went on to say that his store manager “does not want us to share this information with customers,” claiming the omission is ” enough F’d up”.
Starbucks also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In the comments section of the Reddit post, many more chimed in, some sharing their own impressions and experiences with the drinks, which include lattes, shaken espressos, golden foam cold brews, cortados, a martini and more. Again.
“The caffeine is a stimulant for your gut and the oil a relaxant,” wrote one Redditor. “So yeah wonderful idea from Starbucks.”
“Person with stomach/gut issues thanking you for standing tall,” another wrote.
“I tried them, and after honestly drinking them, they just felt sick to my stomach,” another commented. “Like I had no appetite after that and it was the only thing I had all day.”

“Cold brew is good until you taste the foam because it’s two pumps of olive oil. like- the moss is green,” wrote another Redditor who says they are a barista. “Worst of all was the latte for me. you immediately get hit with just olive oil and i wanted to vomit afterwards yeah i don’t recommend.”
Another user however pointed out that “green olive oil is normal and generally an indication of better quality…Green does not mean it is bad or disgusting.
Some reviews of Oleato drinks have been positive, such as one Twitter user who writing, “Starbucks, the new Oleato drink is damn delicious! Love!!!” and a Redditor who said, “I’ve tried all 3 and loved them all. We had no issues. But others detail more harrowing experiences with the drinks.
“Oleato at Starbucks is a legitimate laxative”, tweeted a person.
“This oleato drink from starbs makes my stomach talk,” tweeted another.
“#Oleato – so far my stomach is rumbling and my throat is burning”, writing another Twitter user, sharing an image of their Espresso Venti Oleato Iced Shaken. “I don’t know if it’s the olive oil.”
Why might this effect occur?
Consuming oil, such as castor oil, has been a tried and true method of relieving constipation since healers sold the balm in the late 1800s. But could a little of your morning coffee work as a “laxative”, as some have claimed?
“Castor oil has long been a remedy for constipation. Oil of any kind can help stool move through the digestive tract, especially if you’ve been constipated for a while,” says Frances Largeman-Roth , RDN, to TODAY.com “Olive oil can definitely have that effect too, especially if you drink a venti or a grande.”
Largeman-Roth also says that if you pair the oil’s possible laxative effect with the fact that coffee is a stimulant for the digestive system, and the combo can pack a one-two punch, sending you straight to the room. of bath. “The effects may be more pronounced if you drink Oleato on an empty stomach,” she adds.
